The forest is a common subject in landscape photography, but it’s not easy to take a good photo. Compared with mountains Scenery and seascapes, and the form of expression of woods even test the photographer’s aesthetic level and discovery ability. The shape of the woods, light conditions, weather conditions and shooting angles will directly affect the artistry of the work.
Shooting woods is not my strong point, and I am still learning and In the exploratory stage, I will only share the existing pre-shooting experience with you. If you have more experience and insights, please add. You can also go to the website of LarsVanDeGoor to learn.
This article will take my woods works as an example, and introduce the early shooting skills from the following five aspects:
light-shape levels Sense
The use of unconventional perspective
The expression of artistic pictures
Small forest view
As the saying goes, landscape photography depends on the sky. Fire burning clouds are naturally the most popular weather conditions, but due to the composition of the picture, the theme of woods usually has no sky in the picture, and the red clouds in the sky cannot play its advantages.
The two types of weather, fog and snow, are particularly suitable for creating atmospheres. Not only can they create a serene and tranquil mood, but they also help conceal messy details and simplify the picture.
The chance of Tyndall phenomenon appearing in the foggy morning is also very high. When the sun rises, you will see pillars of light tilting down from the branches and leaves in the forest. This natural phenomenon is Tyndall phenomenon.
“Warm Winter” was filmed on a misty winter morning, Tyndall The light casts on the forest, adding a ray of warmth, and the arrival of light and shadow makes the picture alive in an instant.
”Fairy World” was taken in the misty morning, with the flowers floating Scattered, paulownia trees are like a fairyland, and the artistic conception of looking at flowers in the mist presents a strong sense of painting.
Light-Shaping a sense of hierarchy
Photography is the art of using light, and the charm of light and color will bring a finishing touch to the picture. The three-dimensional, layered and texture of the woods are inseparable from the role of light. Not only that, light can also render artistic effects.
Different lighting conditions, the photo effects will also be very different. Natural light conditions are uncontrollable, but knowing how to use light reasonably will help express the theme and bring your work to a higher level.
Backlight: The light is in the opposite direction of the lens, the picture has a large contrast between light and dark, the foreground and the background have a strong contrast, and the edge of the object has contour light. Making good use of backlighting can create a visual impact with a special charm. Some light atmospheres that are hard to detect by the human eye can be captured under backlighting. Pay attention to controlling lens glare when shooting.
The above picture is the use of backlighting to express the texture of the leaves
Side backlighting: the light source and the camera’s shooting direction have an obtuse angle relationship, in the picture On the left or right side of the outside, the side backlight is very helpful to shape the layering of the picture and the three-dimensional sense of the object.
Shun light: the light is in the same direction as the lens, and the object receives even light. The details are complete and the scene is truly and objectively restored, but the picture is flat, lacking in layering and three-dimensionality.
The most unpleasant light condition for landscape photography is smooth light, but when the sun just rises, the light shines from above the horizon into the forest, which is especially suitable for expressing the lines of trees. The picture below is taken in light conditions, converted to a single tone to simplify the color in the later stage, and highlight the sense of lines.
Scattered light: The characteristic of scattered light is that the subject is not obvious The contrast of light and shadow is small, and the three-dimensional effect is not strong, which is suitable for expressing the sense of spatial perspective. Because the light effect is flat and soft, it is especially helpful to present a quiet atmosphere.
Use of unconventional perspectives
When you are in the forest, you might as well look up at the sky and look down at the ground through these unconventional perspectives. , You may find a different view.
The above two photos use the angle of view from the top to show the shape of branches.
“Flowers in the Water” uses the overhead perspective to shoot trees in The reflection in the pool and the colorful falling British floating on the water bring a romantic and soft atmosphere to the picture, which is processed into a painting effect.
“Light and Shadow” is also a top-view angle of view. At that time, the top light is not conducive to shooting, but the reflections on the ground of the lush branches of the century-old trees are rich in detail and the texture is patchy. When composing the composition, discard the surrounding scenery and let the reflection Filling the whole picture is more conducive to the subject’s expression.
In addition, aerial photography can also be used to show the “God’s perspective”. Below is the aerial photography of Jiying members traveling around.
Shooting “A Thousand Arrows”, in order to capture the effect of the treetops being lit by the sun’s rays, I entered the Linhaixueyuan three times. The temperature was too low until The third time I used the warm baby to heat the phone to complete successfully.
The expression of artistic pictures
Using “mutations” to increase highlights
Mutation is one of the main aesthetic principles of plane composition, which refers to repetition and similar Among the elements, a different type suddenly appeared, or there was a big change, which formed a contrast with other content. It can be different in shape or color.
Mutation elements are usually very interesting, very effective in attracting the audience’s attention to this point.
The picture above uses the technique of “mutation” to find different shapes and colors in the entire forest. For the post-processing of the photos, please refer to the later example chapter of my new book “The Road to Light”. “Five Steps to Call Out the Dream Forest” lists the screenshots and parameters of each step in detail, and there is a link to download the RAW image. Click “Read Original” at the end of the article to purchase.
Sometimes we encounter very messy shooting scenes, no matter how painstakingly framing the scene, we cannot avoid the clutter that interferes with the picture. When encountering this kind of situation, you can try to use a telephoto lens to shoot a distinctive part and reduce the complexity to simplify the abstract image.
This way of expression does not necessarily have a concrete subject, but it must have eye-catching highlights, or special textures, or jumping colors.
“The Colors of Winter” uses a telephoto lens to capture some parts Regular patterns. Although it is during the daytime shooting, the cloudy weather makes the light very soft. Adjust the white balance in the later stage to show the cool color temperature, and the unified color more prominently expresses the texture of the woods. The photo won the first place in the abstract category in the SonyAlphaAwards2018 Photo Contest.
Find points of interest
The scenery in the woods is full of randomness. If you have a pair of eyes that are good at discovering beauty, you will see some particularly interesting pictures.
The foreground of the picture below is a dry branch resembling a swan. The unique shape and the sun’s rays lock the viewer’s sight firmly in the foreground, and the distant woods become a foil in this photo.
discover regular lines
in nature Some regular arrangements of points, lines and planes are very interesting, and capturing this regular arrangement is one of the common methods for small sceneries. The focus is how to find these rhythms and rhythms in a chaotic environment, which is a test of the photographer’s observation ability.
in the forest Observe carefully, in addition to tall trees, you will find some special patterns and textures. Mottled bark, trunk patterns, and withered leaves are all themes worthy of shooting.
