Photographer SamanthaStortecky has a strong love for film photography. Since his high school years, film photography has been one of his favorite media to express art. Recently, he shared five reasons why he thinks film should be taken.
1. Shooting film takes the photographer away from the comfort zone

When shooting film, the photographer has no chance to see what is being shot on the back of the camera. This is also the biggest worry for those who are interested in film but dare not try it easily. The inability to view the image in real time is daunting. When I started shooting film, I had to push myself out of my comfort zone. Since I couldn’t see the image on the back of the camera, I couldn’t try new things as I thought. It may seem scary at first glance, but trust me, pushing yourself out of your comfort zone will change dramatically for you as an artist and photographer.
2. Believe in your own artistic aesthetics
As I said above, because you can’t view in real time, you must be exact To understand what is being shot. From lighting and position to aperture to shutter speed, every detail that accompanies the perfect image. This makes you no longer rely on the camera to take good pictures, but start to believe in more content in real life and record the world more accurately. Relying solely on your own eyes, you can judge what angle, light, position, and position can make you really create like an artist.
3. Shooting film makes you more hands-on ability
One of the interesting things about shooting film is the ability to physically fix the film and load it into the camera. Some people may not find this interesting, but personally, I like my job. I like to be able to participate in it and experience the satisfaction of loading film. If you want to go further, please try to enter the world of film washing yourself. Put the film in a concealed bag and use chemicals and a household scanner for development. Participating in every part of the whole process, seeing the images come alive with your own eyes is incredible.
4. Easier and faster post-processing
This is probably one of my favorite things when shooting film. If you are a photographer, then you know how long it takes to empty the SD card, import the image to the computer and then edit it. If it is wedding photography, thousands of pictures are even more daunting.
But when shooting film, due to the caution when shooting, there are fewer images to be removed and processed. Since each image is taken correctly in the camera, you only need to spend less time editing the images in post.
This does not mean that the photo does not need to be in Lightroom or Photoshop Processing, but I can assure you that the time spent on film will be a fraction of the time spent editing digital photos!
5. Get more fun and experimentation opportunities
Just like digital photographers can use different presets and editing styles to deal with Like photos, film photographers also have a film library to change the picture effect! Each brand and type of film brings a unique look to your images.
Whether you are looking for grainy black and white images like IlfordDelta3200, or the soft pastel colors of Fuji 400H, or the colorful and vibrant appearance of Kodak Gold200, each film is in its own way. Amazing, and the number of experiments is fun!
If you want to be a little crazy, some film still has light leaks and scratches! No matter what look you are trying to achieve, try it out and have fun!
Are you willing to give it a try now? Of course I hope so, and I promise that once you start integrating film into your life, you will be very happy.
