Nikon Z 50/1.8 S&Z 85/1.8 S lens developer interview

After Nikon has fully entered the micro-single field, a new bayonet era has officially opened-Z. In a short period of time, we should rarely see F-mount lenses renewed, because the Z-mount lens is the future of Nikon, and it is the optical breakthrough point that consumers most want to see new lenses. Among the current star Z-mount products, there are two excellent portrait lenses. They are Z 50mm f/1.8 S and Z 85mm f/1.8 S. The lens research and development personnel at Nikon’s Japan headquarters have answered the questions of consumers. The following is a detailed question and answer.

Q: 85/1.8 adopts multiple focusing, Why is 50/1.8 not adopted?

A: 50/1.8 did not use a multiple focus system, but developed a high torque stepping motor for it. We think this is a more suitable focus system for 50/1.8. Nikon uses a different optimized focusing system for each product.

Q: The resolution of Z-mount lenses is very high. How does Nikon achieve high resolution and blur characteristics at the same time?

A: Each lens has an optimized focus method. A new focus drive system has been developed for the Z-mount lens, which can achieve both high resolution and virtual化 characteristics.

Q: Did you only consider the background blur? Does the design consider both foreground blur and background blur?

A: 50/1.8 is not without considering the foreground blur, but the background blur effect is good. The 85/1.8 lens is as introduced, because the foreground will suddenly become a large bokeh, so the focus is slightly moved backwards, which is easier to control in design. The place that suddenly becomes a large bokeh is difficult to design, so we give priority to the background. Of course, the prospect of blurring is also seriously considered.

A: In order to make 85/1.8 suitable for portrait photography, a design that utilizes the blur characteristics is adopted. In order to avoid coloring, the color difference is reduced.

Q: Usually, if the lens resolution is high, the blur effect will not be very good. How does the Z-mount lens achieve beautiful blur effects?

A: If you pursue high resolution, the blur effect is often poor, and the blur will become blunt and unnatural. In order to prevent this from happening, reduce chromatic aberration and coma aberration as much as possible, preserve spherical aberration, and design a beautiful blur effect.

A: Because the resolution also affects the spherical aberration, while focusing on the blur, a design to adjust the spherical aberration is adopted. For this, the focus method needs to be optimized. We have developed a new focus method to optimize it without reducing the resolution, while also achieving a beautiful blur effect.

Q: Regarding the Z-mount lens, do you pursue a compact and lightweight design? Why not launch F1.2 lens first like Canon, but F1.8 lens first?

A: In order to provide the smallest possible lens with high image quality, we first developed the F1.8 lens. As an F1.8 lens, you may think that the price is a bit high and the size is a bit large, but we have designed such a maximum aperture to be used in various scenes. As an analogy, you can think of it this way. Compared with the F-mount F1.4 lens, it is compact and cheap, and has high performance. F1.2 will be launched in the future, so stay tuned.

Q: High-performance lenses are more expensive than ordinary lenses. This is understandable, but the price of F1.8 is higher than users expected. What is the reason for Nikon’s price? Why is it more expensive than users expect?

A: The grade of the Z mount lens is set to S-type. We hope to provide a product whose size is as small as possible, and whose performance matches that of S-type, is this F1.8. We understand that users want the lens to be cheaper, so you can consider our other series of products.

Q: Nikon’s Z mount lens has good performance and is a good lens for taking photos, but what are the advantages when shooting videos?

A: In terms of the overall product line, F1.8 series and S-type lenses have high image quality, even when the focal length is changed, the created image tone, etc. It will not change. It’s easy when shooting videos. I think the Z-mount lens is suitable for video shooting.

A: In the technical aspect of the mechanical system, the noise is reduced by using a stepping motor. In terms of optical performance, try to minimize the angle of view changes caused by focusing. This design reduces the impact of the focus breathing effect.

A: Reducing the focus breathing effect also has a great impact on the focus method. Researching new focusing methods is an important design requirement for Z-mount lenses. This time, in order to achieve silent recording and reduce the breathing effect of focusing, a new focusing method was adopted.

Q: The F1.4 series with F mount is my favorite lens. Is Nikon planning to launch a 135mm lens with Z mount?

A: For the future development of new products, Nikon will continue to develop a variety of lenses based on listening to users’ requirements for focal length and F-number.

Q: The 50/1.8 and 85/1.8 of the Z series are high-end lenses. Some F mount lenses use plastic mounts. I know this is because of low cost. Are Z-mount lenses also planning to use plastic mounts?

A: In the DX series of Z-mount lenses, some lenses have adopted plastic mounts.

A: Considering the balance of accuracy and cost, S-type is likely to use a metal bayonet.

A: High-end products will use materials that match their grade. We hope to use optimized materials to make products as cheap as possible.

Q: Why is there no gold ring on the outer front of the Z mount lens?

A: For the new bayonet system, we also reconsidered the design. After comprehensively studying the texture of the appearance, we decided that the Z mount lens does not have a gold ring.

I have to say that Nikon’s newly developed Z-series lenses are excellent in terms of center or edge image quality, anti-glare or point image restoration, etc. . Not only is it surpassing the previous F-mount lens, it is also one of the best in the industry under the same focal length. If you are interested in these two lenses, you might as well take advantage of Nikon’s official promotional activities this month to purchase more affordable.
