Use Nikon Z 5’s Depth Synthesis Function: Have fun with model photography!

If you think that the Nikon Z 5 is just a very ordinary entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera, then you are wrong. I have been looking forward to this full-frame mirrorless camera since its release. It is not only a lens that can use Nikon’s Z mount, but also has a highly acclaimed dual SD card slot. In addition, it also retains a very convenient and practical function-focal length change shooting. Some friends may not understand what this function is and how to use it? As a model enthusiast, I am also happy to share everything about this feature with you.

First of all, the “focus change shooting” function is not mysterious. It first appeared on Nikon’s popular SLR camera D850. Its function is to automatically take many photos with different focus in succession.

To turn on this feature, you only need to turn on the Nikon Z 5, press MENU, enter the photo shooting menu, and turn on “focus change shooting”. You will see the interface above.

So how to control the shooting distance? I think, try to use a longer focal length, if you are not using a macro lens, do not get too close, because the camera will not be able to focus the closest distance. I am using Nikon Z 5+Z 24-70mm F/2.8 S, and I set the focal length to 50mm.

Let’s take a look at the effect of normal large aperture shooting. Because I want to shoot with F2.8 to create a beautiful bokeh atmosphere. But when shooting in this situation, the model can only have a clear focus point, and all other parts are blurred. This is not the effect I want.

Then what effect do I want? Of course, the focus should be real! But the left hand closest to the lens can be virtual to create a sense of hierarchy. Then we can use focal length change shooting to shoot a wave. In terms of settings, the number of frames is actually about 50, but I took 100 and it doesn’t matter, it depends on the actual situation. There are 10 levels of focal length between narrow and wide. If the distance between each focal point is very close, then choose the narrowest. I choose 1 here. The shooting interval, if it is only a still life, set it to 0. The exposure of the first composition should be locked. In case of light and shadow changes during the shooting, the first picture shall prevail. Silent shooting is as good as you like. When finished, click Start.

Although I chose to take 100 shots, only 38 shots were actually used. Then copy these photos to your computer and open them with related software.

The finished picture, the result is amazingly clear. And it is a seamless transition, and the picture quality is very delicate. Generally speaking, the shooting process has been completed. But I still want to beautify it a bit more. So there is the final finished picture below.

changes the focal length to shoot. To put it plainly, it gives the photographer more control over the depth of field. In the case of maintaining a certain aperture atmosphere, the subject can still be blurred. In fact, this method is not only suitable for model shooting, many photographers also like to use it to shoot landscapes, and make clear processing of the foreground and background. So why do I like Nikon Z 5 so much, because it has features I like!
